Cutting-edge virtual simulation program for practical nursing students

Jackie Nelson – Dean, Faculty of Health and Community Studies

Health Innovation

Introducing a cutting-edge virtual simulation program for the community college’s practical nursing students. Starting this fall, students will be able to go online 24/7 to test their skills and help prepare them for real-life nursing situations.

How they are changing the world

NorQuest’s students live across Canada and around the world, so it will help them complete their studies without always having to visit the campus. Nursing students can also work on their studies around the clock, helping those who are also juggling family or work commitments. After students complete the program, the hope is they will then stay in their communities and work in local health care facilities.

Why Edmonton?

Leading edge simulation training in Edmonton has already been widely supported and used by several post-secondary institutions such as NorQuest, so taking the technology online was a natural next step.

What does the future look like?

NorQuest is looking to expand virtual simulation training in other programs they offer. They are also investigating using virtual reality training.

“Our students can be educated in the communities where they live. They can do it on their own time.”
