Health Innovation

A silver bandage that has been engineered with less silver but is still able to quickly kill bacteria. Silver has been used throughout the ages to treat wounds because of its antibacterial qualities.

How it’s changing the world

Because the bandage harnesses the most active form of silver, it’s safer, less painful for patients and cheaper to produce. Also because bacterias have developed resistances to traditional go-to treatments such as antibiotics, the health care system is eying up silver again as an effective way to control infections.

Why Edmonton?

Rod Precht attributes this breakthrough to having the “right people at the right time in the right place.” Because wound dressing research has been happening in Edmonton since the 1990s, it soon attracted top-notch research and commercialization talent. Exciton has also flourished, jumping from two to 25 employees in 10 years, and its products are now sold around the world.

What does the future look like?

Early research has shown the silver bandage may actually treat infections found in chronic wounds, potentially moving it from not only a medical device to a medical therapy. A breakthrough here could help improve patient quality of life while saving the health care system money in caring for patients with chronic wounds and those with amputations caused by wounds. Exciton is currently seeking government approvals for a silver therapeutic cream.

We have come up with the next generation of antimicrobial wound dressings.”
